Throughout the day, students at about 1,800 schools across the country have pledged to remain silent for the 2011 Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity.

"Silent Solidarity is a day we set aside to remain silent in honor of those who were silenced because of abortion," UF Pro-Life Alliance Secretary Joshua Brewer said.

Students will wear red duct tape across their mouths with the word "life" on it or red armbands as part of the daylong, nationwide protest, which is organized by Stand True Ministries and Priests for Life.

The UF Pro-Life Alliance will hold a demonstration today on the Plaza of the Americas at 1 p.m. where members will raise awareness about the 50 million children who have been aborted in the U.S., Brewer said.

"This day of solidarity seeks to raise awareness about the sanctity of life and the importance of human life from conception to human death," said Henry Zmuda, Pro-Life Alliance faculty adviser. "Often our society is one who takes advantage of those who don't have a voice, are weak and can't defend themselves."
