Student group to hold race in hopes of rebuilding homes

By running in a race on Saturday, students can help rebuild areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina that some say are forgotten.

The UF Habitat for Humanity will host the 8th annual Hustle for Humanity race Oct. 6 at 8:30 a.m.

Paul Loschak, president of UF Habitat for Humanity, said he hopes enough money will be raised to send 15 people to New Orleans on a collegiate house-building trip during Spring Break.

If more than enough money is raised to send students on the trip, the excess could be donated to Operation Home Delivery, a division of Habitat for Humanity that builds homes on the Gulf Coast said Loschak, a UF mechanical engineering junior.

Sara Tolliver, the group's fundraising chair, said the money could also fund builds in East Gainesville or be sent to the organization's international chapter.

After tabling on Tuesday, Tolliver, a zoology junior, said at least 75 runners have signed up.

The organization will continue tabling on the Reitz Union Colonnade through Friday to reach its goal of 100 runners, she said.

The race is open to the general public, and registration can also be found on the UF Habitat for Humanity Web site.

Registration before the race is ,12 for UF and SFCC students, and registration for all runners on the day of the race is ,15.

Tolliver said the four-mile race will follow a new route this year, beginning at the Reitz Union Colonnade instead of at Shands Hospital, and it will hit every corner of campus.

"There's a lot of construction down by where we generally start," she said. "We also like the centralized location of the Reitz. It's easy for students to get to, and it's a familiar place."

She said one female and one male runner with the top times in each age category will win gold hammers, while the overall male and female winners will receive larger gold "mammoth hammers."
