When life gives you lemons: Living in color

I was browsing through my Twitter feed the other day and found the most thought-provoking quote I’ve read in a while: “the little things make life big.”

I thought about the meaning behind it for a couple days and realized people, who live interesting, exciting lives cherish the little things. Does it really matter what color binder you purchase from the office supply store? Does it really matter if you wear white shoes instead of pink? Does it really matter? Yes.

I’ve always had people around me who didn’t understand the point of dressing up every day. If you look good, you feel good, and if you feel good, you do great things in the world. The same concept applies to the little things in life.

If you get your favorite color binder instead of the standard black one, you’ll be more inclined to reach for it and use it. If you feel more confident by wearing white shoes instead of pink, that goes a long way too. Little things do matter.

A couple days ago, I was talking to a friend about what we wanted out of college. She was focusing on the big picture: to get a job, to be able to live in New York, etc. Yet again, I realized it’s not about the big picture when you’re living colorfully. It’s about the smaller picture – the now. When you’ve conquered every moment — the small picture — you need not worry about the big picture.

Living colorfully allows you to absorb everything around you and constantly seize opportunities. Maybe you normally study over the weekend. Maybe you normally go on tours when you’re in another country.

In an abstract sense, living colorfully is about experiencing new colors and new things. Haven’t you always wanted to sky dive? Haven’t you always wanted to start attending salsa dance classes? Why don’t we try something different?

It’s all about the experiences… the little things make life BIG.
