A UF class is beautifying buildings across campus.

Esperanza Hincapie, a 22-year-old UF visual art studies senior, painted a mural on the wall of the first-floor hallway of Little Hall on Sunday. The mural is one of 12 created across campus by art students in the class Site Specific Painting, said Julia Morrisroe, an associate professor in UF’s School of Art + Art History.

In the class, students create art that interacts with the architecture, she said. For the project, they created pieces of art on buildings and objects around UF, including the Fine Arts courtyard and Innovation Square.

Hincapie said she decided to create a mural at Little Hall because she noticed the space was dull. It was the first time permission was given to put art on Little Hall.

Her mural was inspired by Parkinson’s disease, a neurosystem disorder that affects motor skills.

When conducting Parkinson’s research, doctors use activity sensors to collect data, she said. These reflect light.

“I took those reflections and created a line work from them, a connect-the-dot type thing,” Hincapie said.

Hincapie said she’s proud of her work. She said she hopes students at Little Hall notice and appreciate it.

“I think it really brightens the dark places, especially at night” she said. “It brings it out a lot with the lights that turn on.”

She said she’s not sure how long the mural will be up. The department of mathematics will decide when to take it down.

Oicenth Josephs, the facilities manager for the School of Art + Art History, coordinated the placement of the art in the different spaces. For the mural, Josephs got permission from the department of mathematics.

“The departments appreciate the fact that our students are doing their artwork, and it’s part of their education to get this exposure,” she said.
