A new era for Florida soccer kicks off Thursday evening on the road against UCF. Head coach Nick Zimmerman begins his first season in Gainesville and opens his Gator career in his home state as a Tampa native.
Zimmerman spent seven seasons at SEC foe Mississippi State, helping develop the Bulldogs into a consistent national contender. In 2024, Mississippi State won the SEC championship after finishing conference play with a perfect 10-0 record.
In his first season as manager in 2025, Zimmerman guided the Bulldogs to a 12-7-1 record.
But Zimmerman faces a tall task to begin his Florida tenure.
Thursday marks the fourth time in program history that the Gators and Knights have opened a season against one another. Florida leads the all-time series 14-8-2, but UCF won the most recent meeting 1-0 last season at Donald R. Dizney Stadium.
The Knights posted a 12-4-5 record in 2025 and finished fifth in the Big 12 with a 5-1-5 mark in conference play. Their season ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 1-0 loss to Duke.
Gabi Berchon returns as one of UCF's top offensive threats. The redshirt sophomore recorded three goals and three assists in 2025.
Former U.S. defender and 1996 Olympic gold medalist Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak enters her 14th season at the helm of the Knights. During her tenure, she has led UCF to six NCAA Tournament appearances.
The Gators hold a 21-7-3 record in season openers and are .500 all time when opening the season on the road.
Florida's roster features 29 players, including 18 newcomers. Eight freshmen joined the program ahead of the 2026 campaign, while Zimmerman added 10 players through the transfer portal. Seven of those transfers followed Zimmerman from Mississippi State to Florida after combining for 17 goals in 2025, accounting for 49% of the Bulldogs' scoring.
Sophomore Addy Hess headlines Florida's returning offensive production after leading the Gators with four goals, three assists and 11 points in 2025. She is joined by sophomores Sophia Sindelar and Katie Johnston, who scored three and two goals, respectively, along with junior Skye Barnes, who added two goals and an assist.
Also, Florida had five players named to the 2026 SEC Soccer Preseason Watchlist. Defender Hannah Jibril, forwards Zoe Main and Kyra Taylor, goalkeeper Paloma Peña and midfielder Adia Symmonds earned preseason recognition ahead of the Gators' first season under Zimmerman.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at the UCF Soccer Complex, with the match streaming on ESPN+.
