This week, I got a chance to take part in more fitness classes, this time Ashtanga Yoga at the Student Rec Center.

As someone who had never done any sort of Yoga before, I really didn't know what to expect.

Once the class got underway, I realized that Yoga is definitely more spiritual than any other exercise that I've ever taken part in.

Ashtanga Yoga has eight studies or "limbs" that focus on mostly on moral codes, self-purification and study, posture, breath control, sense control, intention, meditation and contemplation.

Originally from India, Yoga employs a cross between active and static stretching while emphasizing proper technique and breathing. I have a tendency to hold my breath a lot when I stretch, and the instructor kindly corrected my technique several times throughout the class.

Many of the poses I did throughout the class focused on the lower back and core such as back bends and inversions, along with seated and standing poses that also engaged my hamstrings and glutes. In the video below are some of the stretches I did for the class.

One thing that I thought was very fascinating about the class was how much time we dedicated to meditation and focus. While I was lying on my back with one leg outstretched with the help of a nylon strap stretching my hamstring then my groin, the instructor kept telling the class to breathe and close our eyes.

"Focus on something that made you angry. Focus on something that you have to do later. Think about the moment right now, and slowly exhale and release the other two. Live in this moment right now," my instructor said, as relaxing spa-like music from Enya played in the background.

For a lot of people who do not particularly like going to the gym to sweaty and nasty from running or lifting weights, give Yoga a shot.

Unlike a lot of other fitness classes that leave me panting and exhausted, I left the Yoga class a little sore, but relaxed and definitely got a great workout for my core. Yoga has been known as a great form of stress relief and can also help improve your posture.
