The Florida men’s swimming and diving team took two national titles

and improved from seventh to fifth on the second day of the 2011

NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships.

Senior Brett Fraser led the team with his first-place finish in the

200-yard freestyle, and head coach Gregg Troy said his efforts were

invaluable for the Gators.

“Brett Fraser really stepped up for us today,” Troy said. “His work

ethic and attitude prepared him for this event, and he was

tremendous.”

Fraser said he’s excited to join his brother Shaune in winning an

NCAA title.

“My brother always teases me about how he won the 200 free, but now

he can’t say anything,” he said. “I’m much more proud of the 800

free relay title because it was a team relay, and that’s what it’s

all about.”

The 800 free relay team of Fraser, sophomore Sebastien Rousseau,

junior Jeffrey Raymond and senior Conor Dwyer took first place

(6:14.88) in the event.

am so happy for two guys like Sebastien and Jeff,” Troy said. “They

were essential in our relay success, and the effort they gave

tonight in the back-end of the relay was exactly the type of

premier performances we strive for at Florida.”

Other such performances were the sixth-place (3:45.03) finish

senior Mike Joyce took in the 400 individual medley and the

fifth-place (46.06) finish redshirt sophomore Marco Loughran took

in the 100 backstroke.

Loughran also contributed to the Gators’ sixth place (1:25.69)

finish in the 200-medley relay, along with Fraser, freshman Marcin

Cieslak and sophomore Rodion Davelaar.

“We had a fantastic day today,” head coach Gregg Troy said. “I

can’t tell you how proud I am of the guys. We stood up and raced

tough all day long; especially Conor Dwyer. He took adversity and

did the very best with it.”

No. 5 Florida goes into Day 2 of competition, which starts today at

noon, with 213 points. The Gators are just one point behind No. 6

Arizona. No. 1 California stands in first with 352 points.
