No. 6 Gators men’s golf capped off a dominant performance at the Hamptons Intercollegiate on Tuesday, winning by 15 strokes and securing the first team victory of the season. Led by senior Jack Turner, who finished -6 through 54 holes, the Gators were on fire at the Maidstone Club.
The tournament featured 12 teams, including rival Florida State and Ivy League schools like Harvard, Princeton and Yale. Florida ended at a collective -6 and was the only team to finish below par.
After a shaky start to the fall season, the Gators, who started the season ranked No. 1, rolled in East Hampton, New York, putting together a performance that left three Gators in the top-10 individual standings.
In Round 1, Florida jumped out to a 6-stroke lead over Ole Miss, who was the only other team to go under in the first 18 holes. Luke Poulter shot a -4 but ended up shooting +1 and +6 in Rounds 2 and 3, landing him in a tie for 13th at +3 in the tournament.
Round 2 was much the same for the Gators, who were the only team to go under at -3. It was a fantastic round of golf for Turner, who carded a -4 with six birdies. He ended at -4, marking his second team-best finish of the season and flying up to third on the individual leaderboard.
Right behind him, Trevor Gutschewski shot a -3 through 54 holes, earning a tie for fourth place in the individual rankings. Gutschewski’s performance was headlined by an eagle on the 16th hole in Round 1 on a 485-yard par 5. After the first round, he sat at -3. Shooting even in Rounds 2 and 3, that total persisted. It was Gutschewski’s career-best finish.
All seven participants for Florida finished in the top-22. Noah Kent finished +2 in a tie for ninth and Josh Bai ended at +4 in a tie for 17th.
The two Parkers played as individuals this week: Parker Sands (T13) and Parker Severs (T22). Both players shot their first below-par round in the third with a -1.
The Gators will conclude the fall season at the Williams Cup at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, North Carolina. The Tar Heels will host the tournament featuring SEC opponents, including Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Auburn and Oklahoma. The tournament will run from Oct. 18-20.
