UF’s Student Government discussed scooter safety and commission appointments at Tuesday night’s Senate meeting.

Officer Jeff Holcomb told senators he wants to make scooter helmet safety a priority. University Police and GatorWell are working together to encourage students to use helmets while riding scooters, he said.

“We’ve had campus committees formed on this in the past, trying to increase the usage,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll see maybe this take ground.”

Later, senators discussed Elections Commission appointments.

Sen. Daniella Saetta (Access, Graduate) objected the unanimous approval of Dale Dowden for SG’s Elections Commission.

Sen. Preston Jones (Access, Hume) questioned why Dowden wasn’t at the Senate meeting.

“I know he had a prior commitment, but being on the Elections Commission during election cycle, especially a Spring cycle, is a huge commitment of time,” he said. “If he can’t find the time to show up tonight to explain why this is something he wants to do, I just have real concerns that he’s not going to have the time to put in the effort.”

Senate Majority Leader Haley Smith (Impact, District A) argued against Jones’ statements, saying Dowden’s missing the meeting shouldn’t be counted against him.

“There’s been plenty of situations where senators in this room have missed a meeting,” she said. “I don’t think this is a reflection on Dowden’s character at all. I think we all need to understand that the election started today.”
