A Gainesville man accused of threatening his wife with a beer bottle, attempting to strangle her with a phone cord, and preventing contact with police was arrested Tuesday night.
Gainesville Police charged Jason Lamont Smith, 35, with aggravated domestic assault, domestic battery and obstructing justice.
Police gave the following account:
Smith and his wife have been married since November 2006. At about 8 p.m. Tuesday, the couple started to argue about their divorce.
Smith got angry, and the fight heated up. He pinned his wife down on the bed, a beer bottle raised in his hand.
“I’ll bust you up,” he said.
The couple’s 6-year-old son, who watched the fight unfold, dialed 911 from the bedroom phone.
Smith put the bottle down and ripped the phone from the wall. He grabbed the wire and tried to strangle his wife with it.
The woman pushed away the cord with her foot to prevent Smith from strangling her.
After the struggle, Smith gave up and left the room.
Police got to the house at 914 NE 25th Terrace and arrested Smith at 9:48 p.m.
According to the report, the woman received two scratches from the fight: one above her right eye and one on her right cheek.
Police booked Smith into Alachua County Jail, where he remained Wednesday with a $40,000 bond.
