College teams up with Locks of Love to help people who have lost hair

Local residents in need of a haircut will have a chance to give their locks to a donation drive sponsored by SFCC today.

SFCC is holding its first hair-donation drive today for Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that provides hair pieces to children who are suffering from long-term medical hair loss.

The Locks of Love Web site lists alopecia and cancer as possible causes for hair loss.

Lucy Paltoo, graduate assistant of the Office of Community Service at SFCC, said other colleges that were participating in the nationwide program inspired her to organize one for SFCC.

"This is the first time Santa Fe has ever done anything like this," Paltoo said.

She said that 10 inches is the minimum hair length needed to donate.

The group is also offering cuts and trims for a ,5 donation each, Paltoo said.

The donation drive is a way to get the students and faculty involved who do not have 10 inches to donate, she said.

Everyone is invited, and it is not exclusive to SFCC faculty and staff, she added.

Locks of Love was started in 1997 by Madonna Coffman when her 4-year-old daughter was diagnosed with alopecia and lost all of her hair, the organization's Web site stated.

The donation drive will take place in the Oak Grove at SFCC's Northwest Campus from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
