Santa Fe Community College holds event for hair donations

Despite a chilly morning, 30 people came to trim their tresses Wednesday to give 150 inches to SFCC's first hair-donation drive.

Lucy Paltoo, the event organizer, said 10 people donated a total of 150 inches of hair to Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to children suffering from long-term medical hair loss. Paltoo said another 20 people that didn't have the minimum 10 inches of hair to donate took part in the event by paying for their haircuts.

Haircuts and trims were offered for a ,5 donation.

SFCC communications specialist Julie Garrett said people were being turned away because there wasn't enough time to cut the hair of everyone who wanted to donate.

She said it was slow in the morning because of the cold, but as the day progressed, more people showed up.

"It was really cold, and some people had to get their hair spritzed with water in order to cut it," Garrett said.

Paltoo, graduate assistant of the Office of Community Service at SFCC, said two hairstylists from Avant-Garde Salon provided the haircuts.
