If the inaugural season of UF lacrosse is to end on a positive note, it will have to come in postseason play.
The Gators (9-7, 1-4 American Lacrosse Conference) ended the regular season with a two-game losing streak following a 19-5 loss at No. 2 Northwestern on Sunday.
Northwestern scored two goals in the opening minute and didn’t look back.
Florida was shutout by the five-time defending national champions 14-0 in the first half, but managed five goals on seven shots in the second half.
Freshman attacker Janine Hillier led the Gators in scoring with two goals. Northwestern’s 19 goals were scored by 11 different players. Freshman goalkeeper Cara Canington matched her career-high 11 saves on Sunday.
UF’s focus will now shift to the ALC tournament in Columbus, Ohio.
The No. 6 seed Gators will face No. 3 seed Johns Hopkins on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. If they advance to Friday’s semifinals, they will face No. 2 seed Vanderbilt.
Florida lost to Vanderbilt on April 18 12-7 in Gainesville.
