What was supposed to be a Senior Day celebration for the Gators quickly turned into a nightmare Saturday afternoon.

For the first time since Feb. 19, 2024, against Oklahoma State, Florida was shut out at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.

Moreover, the last time the Gators were blanked at home in SEC play came against Auburn on April 8, 2023.

Keeping one of the nation’s top-five offenses in check, Auburn starting pitcher Ella Harrison delivered a dominant performance.

The right-hander tossed her first seven-inning shutout of the season and recorded seven strikeouts.

Behind Harrison’s excellence, Auburn (24-20, 3-14) snapped its 12-game SEC losing streak against No. 4 Florida (42-6, 15-5 SEC) on Saturday at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. Florida’s offense was silent all day and was 2 for 13 at the plate with runners in scoring position.

Postgame Wednesday night, head coach Tim Walton made his message clear.

“We need another pitcher to step up if we’re going to make a run in the postseason,” he said.

The message was brief but definitive; it can’t be just Keagan Rothrock carrying the workload.

Walton turned to freshman Leah Stevens on Saturday, and she provided a promising answer to the Gators’ pitching concerns early.

She wasted no time asserting herself. In the top of the first, Stevens struck out the side for the first time in her young collegiate career.

However, that momentum quickly vanished in the top of the second. Stevens surrendered a leadoff walk to Haven Roebuck, and moments later, Ma’Nia Womack launched her 11th home run of the season, giving Auburn a 2-0 advantage.

In search of an immediate response, redshirt freshman left fielder Townsen Thomas led off the bottom of the second with a backside double to right-center. Senior third baseman Kendall Grover followed with a single to left and later stole second, giving Florida second and third with no outs.

However, Tigers starting pitcher Ella Harrison settled in and worked out of the jam, recording three straight outs and stranding the runners at second and third.

Finally, it seemed that Florida would plate a run in the bottom of the fifth, when yet again the Gators forced runners on second and third. But Harrison once again fought out of the threat, and time was running out for UF.

The Tigers found two crucial insurance runs with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth. Ava Ratliff singled into right, extending the advantage 4-0.

In search of a late rally, junior left fielder Cassidy McLellan led the seventh off with a base hit into right field, but Harrison settled in and wrapped things up.

The one bright spot for the Gators was after the loss, when seniors Jocelyn Erickson and Kenleigh Cahalan were both awarded golden tickets to the Athletes Unlimited Softball League draft on May 4th.

“The University of Florida changed my life forever. I met so many amazing people here, and I would not have changed a thing about my journey. Erickson said.

The rubber match of the series is set for Sunday. First pitch is at 1 p.m. at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.
