Gainesville Police officers reported that they Tasered a UF student after he ignored requests to get down after they found him at a house in Southwest Gainesville covered in blood.
Ryan Reed, 21, was booked at the Alachua County Jail on charges of resisting arrest early Tuesday morning.
A report from GPD gave the following account of events:
Officers, who were responding to reports of gunshots at about 2:15 a.m., surrounded the house at 325 S.W. 12th St. after seeing windows shatter.
Thinking people in the house might be shooting at them, the officers shouted for the people inside to come out.
Reed responded by saying, "I'm gonna (expletive) you up."
Officers kicked the door open and found Reed coming out of a bedroom with blood on his chest and arms.
Police said Reed ignored multiple requests to get down.
Officers Nick Byrd and Michael Maresca shot him in the torso with Taser guns at the same time to get him on the ground and ordered him to stay still.
When Reed still did not listen, Byrd shot him a second time with the Taser gun while Maresca handcuffed him.
Officers said they were nervous Reed would either arm himself or barricade himself in the room.
Reed told officers he had been drinking at Mother's Pub when he got into a fight with two people at the bar.
On his way home, Reed said he noticed two men who he thought might have been the men from the bar walking behind him.
When he got home, Reed said he took a shotgun outside to confront the two men, who ran away.
Police also found Bradley Carter, 21, and Charles Caraway, 23, at the house.
Carter, also a UF student, said he heard several rounds fired after Reed took the shotgun outside.
Carter said he had been in a fight with Reed trying to get the gun away from him when police entered the house.
GPD spokesman Keith Kameg said Carter also had blood on his shirt.
Police could not identify the blood on Carter's and Reed's shirts, Kameg said.
"We do not know what they were shooting at, but no one wanted to admit who fired the gun and why," he said.
All three men appeared angry and intoxicated, he said.
Police also found drug paraphernalia in Caraway's room and 12-gauge shotgun shells in his pocket, the report stated.
Police charged both Reed and Caraway with discharge of a firearm within city limits.
Caraway was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
Reed, who was the only one arrested, was also charged with resisting an officer without violence.
He was booked at the Alachua County Jail.
UF spokesman Steve Orlando said the university could take action against Reed.
"The University of Florida can do anything up to and including expelling Reed from college," he said.
