University of Florida as an institution spends an additional $380,110,000.00 annually on goods and services. University of Florida employs 11% of the Gainesville work force. Due to the student population of the University of Florida, Gainesville has the highest percentage of people between the ages of 18-34 years of any major market in Florida. Gainesville also has the lowest median age of any major market in the state. More than 93.6% of the student population are loyal readers of The Alligator.

The Independent Florida Alligator is an award-winning, student-run newspaper covering the University of Florida and the greater Gainesville area. Its daily reporting covers news, sports, art and culture, investigations and a Spanish-language section, El Caimán. It is the largest student-run newspaper in the United States, with a daily circulation of 14,000 and a readership of more than 21,000. About 100 students from the University of Florida and Santa Fe College serve on The Alligator's staff each semester. The Alligator prints on a weekly basis, with free copies distributed every Monday to newsracks on campus and around Gainesville.

March 12 – NCAA cancels the remaining athletic events due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments as well as all other championships. Notable sports cut short included gymnastics, golf, baseball, softball, tennis, and track and field.
