Swimming until your fingertips form mountain ridges, reading library books as the regularly scheduled rain pings at your window and napping with the smell of sunscreen lotion lingering on your cool sheets are just a few of the childhood summer mementos we hold close to our sunburnt hearts. Just because you have summer classes doesn’t mean you can’t tap into a youthful experience with exploration and adventure in a town most students only get to know in their adult life. Here are our favorite (somewhat) hidden gems and summer pastimes.

UF is planning for a lot of changes in the coming years. Earlier this month, students found out about the $2.2 billion expansion and projects planned by administrators. These include an expanded honors program residential space, a new student healthcare facility and turning Union Road and parts of Newell Drive into pedestrian walkways. Although these changes sound appealing, I have some thoughts on them.

Summer B marks the halfway point of summer session, but for most of the fresh faces on campus, this is just the beginning. With beginnings come the transition period of figuring out what the hell is going on in this humid, and at times bizarre, place we call Gainesville. The Florida Senate voted 33-6 in favor of a bill that would raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21. The bill received support as a means to stop the increasing number of teenagers using e-cigarettes and tobacco products. While almost everyone agrees that smoking is unhealthy, this bill isn’t the right way to curb tobacco use.

Dwight Jenkins, 59, and Cayley Buckner, 21-year-old UF English and natural resource conservation senior, dance Friday night during the opening of the “A Walk in the Park” exhibition. Jenkins and Buckner are both members of the Gainesville Old-Time Dance Society, a local community for contra dancing. Contra dancing is a type of social dance where people can attend alone and find a partner at the event. “I hated dancing before I found contra,” said Buckner, who has been dancing for about four years. “I was the kid who would sneak off to the library and read during school dances.”
