I stay away from reality TV contests, but occasionally a performance goes viral that gets me to pay attention. A couple of weeks ago, it was 6-year-old Aaralyn O’Neil who got me glued to a YouTube clip of her performance on “America’s Got Talent.”

I love Angelina Jolie’s coming out about her mastectomy, for so many reasons. Girls and women right now are growing up in an overwhelmingly gendered society and much of that continues to be perpetuated by women. Instead of providing positive and strong influences of femininity, companies and celebrities choose to remain disconnected from creating a safer, more equal society.

I’m sure most of you have heard of #safetytipsforladies. Buzzfeed recently did a piece on this newly feminist friendly hashtag. This is just one of the many new sarcastic and poignant ways feminists are utilizing social media to their advantage in commentating on patriarchal culture in a fast paced, relatable way. Two years ago, no one expected the string of revolutions in the Middle East to spread to Syria. President Bashar al-Assad was well-liked among the Arabs as one of the few leaders to espouse and promote the cause of Arab nationalism — even though we now realize it was empty rhetoric. He stood up against the West, ensured Syria remained a stable, safe country (due to his tight grip), and Syria’s economy wasn’t too bad — no one really had complaints of him. Having gone to Syria, I knew no one could complain. The dreaded, omnipresent Mukhabarat (an intelligence agency known for its secret police) has been feared by Syrians for decades — a fear that I felt even here in America. I have been told by my family on numerous occasions to not talk politics or say anything about the president while in Syria, for my safety and the safety of my family.

The college campus is no doubt a progressive environment. Of all places, UF probably would not suffer from an issue like gender discrimination.
