Paul Austin, a 21-year-old UF veterinary medicine student, performs a trick on his skateboard Tuesday evening at Possum Creek Park, 4009 NW 53rd Ave. Austin works full time as the head assembly technician specialist at Fabco-Air, Inc. and takes all of his classes online, but he said he tries to practice skating at least two or three times per week. “It’s my way to get out and be free,” Austin said. “It’s like flying to me.”

Both students said they joined the club their freshman year to form a better connection with their culture and meet new people.

Zak Kostamo, a 20-year-old UF microbiology and cell sciences sophomore, cleans up painting supplies Saturday afternoon during Project Makeover Weekend at Lake Forest Elementary School. Project Makeover is an organization that selects one low-income school in Alachua County each year and helps out over the course of three days by painting murals and landscaping around the building. The organization has 105 full-time members, including Kostamo and about 1,300 volunteers who help during the makeover weekend.

Sakshi Gopal Das, a 42-year-old Hare Krishna, prepares masala dosa, an Indian dish served with chutney, Saturday during the Gainesville VegFest at Depot Park. Das works at the Alachua chapter of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. VegFest had over 100 tents and tables set up around the park, and the majority of the food vendors offered vegan and vegetarian dishes to customers.

Lizzie Jenkins, the author of the 1998 book “The Real Rosewood,” speaks Thursday to a crowd of about 85 people at the Matheson History Museum. Jenkins spoke about her aunt who was assaulted during the 1923 Rosewood Massacre as well as her own experiences with racism during the civil rights movement. “What happened to me,” Jenkins said, “I don’t want it to happen to anybody else.”
