HOOVER, Ala. - Georgia is one of the favorite picks for best team in the nation heading into the season, but writers at Southeastern Conference Media Days chose UF to win the East Division and come away with the conference crown.
Ten hours of waiting in an airport to join his new team on the road.
Gainesville city commissioners say underage drinking in downtown and midtown bars has gone far enough, and they're willing to close the door on everyone under 21 if the problem isn't resolved.
Gainesville finished 6th in ESPN's TitleTown voting with 5.2 percent of the vote. Sorry, Gator fans. Valdosta, Ga. (didn't see that one coming) won the contest. Boston was the only major metropolitan area to be in the top six. Apparently big-city citizens don't watch ESPN as much as you'd think.
UF's volleyball squad is the youngest it's been in years, but it could be a quick rebuilding effort. Incoming setter Kelly Murphy was named the National High School Coaches Association Volleyball athlete of the year recently. Former Gator Angie McGinnis, currently with Team USA, won the award in 2004. Murphy is also the Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year.
After signing former UF point guard Anthony Roberson a few weeks ago, the New York Knicks have acquired another former Gator. Taurean Green, point guard for the national championship teams, has been traded by the Denver Nuggets to the Knicks. Former South Carolina Gamecock Renaldo Balkman was the centerpiece in the trade, going from New York to Denver. David Lee, also a UF alum, is also on the Knicks. While having former Gators is probably a comfort for Green and Roberson, it won't help their playing time. Stephon Marbury, Mardy Collins, Jamal Crawford, Nate Robinson and the recently signed Chris Duhon are all guards on New York's roster.
HOOVER, Ala. - Five straight losses to end the season are never good. For Steve Spurrier and the South Carolina Gamecocks fans, it was awful.
UF President Bernie Machen announced a plan Friday to give faculty and staff small pay raises for the first time in two years.
HOOVER, Ala. - Big news from here in Alabama, if media predictions count as big news.
HOOVER, Ala. - I hope you're all not tired of my blogs yet. I'll have a couple more today.
Alligator Staff Writer Phil Kegler just finished interviewing Auburn defensive end Sen'derrick Marks. When Phil asked Marks if he missed seeing the Gators on the schedule this season, Marks replied in the affirmative.
Locking your gas cap could become as important as locking your car doors.
If some members of UF's Student Senate get their way, Paul Drayton's decision to take a business internship in the Big Apple this summer could spell the end of his career as Student Body treasurer.
It's not often students can power a room just by working up a sweat, but that's one of the goals David Bowles, director of Recreational Sports, has in mind for renovations to Southwest Recreation Center.
HOOVER, Ala. - Georgia wide receiver Mohamed Massaqoui and defensive tackle Jeff Owens also answered questions about the infamous touchdown celebration against the Gators last season.
In his July 22 column, Joshua Simmons illogically reasoned that low enrollment numbers in the CHOICES program could only mean that the program is "exactly the wrong model of health care" for Alachua County's working poor. What Mr. Simmons has failed to consider is that low enrollment numbers may be a symptom of other problems, such as citizens simply being unaware of the program. Many social programs take a few years to get off the ground. This seems to be the case with CHOICES.
A city with no "help wanted" signs, zero classified ads and no applications. A desk covered in backed-up bills and a car with an empty tank of gas. A passing dream of a loyal paycheck.
It seemed like a simple question when asked. But it prompted the longest answer from Georgia coach Mark Richt at the start of Southeastern Conference Media Days this morning in Hoover, Ala. What were you thinking when you told the entire team to run onto the field and celebrate after scoring a touchdown against the Gators on Oct. 27 in Jacksonville?
