COVID-19 cases in Alachua County dropped in the last week — continuing the downward trend that began at the end of January. As the surge settles, UF Health Shands Hospital CEO Ed Jimenez ended his weekly updates to the press, including The Alligator, on Monday.
Santa Fe College reported 54 positive COVID-19 cases from students and employees from Feb 8. to Monday. Five employees and 49 students tested positive for the virus.
Santa Fe reported 99 COVID-19 cases from students and employees from Jan. 31 to Monday. Five employees and 94 students tested positive for the virus.
Adult hospitalizations fell from 314 to 276 on Monday, according to the county dashboard. There were 50 adults in the Intensive Care Unit Monday compared to 96 on Jan. 31. There are 15 patients on ventilators as of Monday. About 90% of patients on ventilators are unvaccinated, according to the county’s Facebook page.
New positive cases decreased to 3,596 from 4,943 cases. The positivity rate went down from 30.7% in the week of Jan. 21 to 27.3%, according to the county COVID-19 dashboard.
UF will no longer provide isolation dorms for students who live on campus for a “proper quarantine or isolation length,” according to UF Health’s Screen Test & Protect. No further information on how long these periods last is available.

There were 160 new cases in Alachua County this week — 35 fewer than the prior week. Weekly cases fell by nearly 90% since the week of Aug. 27, when there were 1,526 cases reported.
