More than an athlete: Amelia Hundley’s work outside the gym and in the classroom

Anytime someone referenced Urban Meyer, I was quick to correct them.
Despite the season being cut short, the list of Florida swimmers and divers that nabbed SEC postseason honors was a long one.
It was all Urban Meyer could do to keep his team from getting into a brawl. He was frantically grabbing players, urging his Gators to not engage with Georgia in its antics.
Sitting in the chair backs of the south endzone at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is a weekly routine of mine (when classes are in session and there isn’t a global pandemic, that is). My time in The Swamp typically gives me whatever I need – whether it be time to study or time to self-reflect.
I’m here to set the record straight.
Florida senior third baseman Kirby McMullen will return to the Gators for his redshirt senior season. His decision was first reported by Gator Country’s Nick de la Torre.
Positioned just behind Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on a chilly Wednesday night, swimmers and water polo players pack UF’s Florida Pool. As their rental time comes to an end, a group of hockey players burst through the gates ready for their time in the pool. But these aren’t your typical ice-loving hockey players decked out head-to-toe in equipment.
Just a day before his team opened SEC play against Georgia — with no fans in attendance — UF pitcher Jack Leftwich was poolside with teammates Jordan Butler and Cal Greenfield. The trio was taking advantage of canceled classes just before they faced off against the No. 3 Bulldogs when they heard the news.

For a few brief seconds, utter silence, as seemingly every fan in the stadium drew a collective inhale. And then, pandemonium.
Seasons have been cut short. Pinnacles have been postponed. Gyms have been emptied. Pools have been splash-less.
Trinity Thomas had a perfect plan lined up.
The cancellation of all spring sports included 23-4 Florida softball. With bad losses a distant memory and convincing wins in the immediate rearview, it seemed the Gators had growing momentum to make 2020 a magical season.

Originally, I was going to write about the best game I ever covered. As a guy who has been with the Alligator for five semesters, I figured that I had plenty of games to write about.
