The Gators women’s golf team heads to Atlanta to compete in the East Lake Cup this week.
The East Lake Cup is a three-day tournament that takes place Oct. 26-28. The first day of stroke play will determine seeding for the following two days of match play.
The competition features four of the top men’s and women’s teams from the 2019 season. The men’s team is playing Texas Tech, Pepperdine, Oklahoma and Texas, while the women’s team is playing South Carolina, Ole Miss, Texas and the Gators. This is Florida’s first time competing in the event.
UF is looking to conclude its fall slate with a better finish than in its first two tournaments. The team came in seventh place at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in early October and tied for sixth at The Ally at Old Waverly last week.
The Gators have flashed signs of greatness at times this fall despite recent struggles. They led The Ally after the first round with sophomore Annabell Fuller finishing in the top 10. They will look to string together three full rounds of championship play this week.
Coach Emily Batsel Glaser will keep the core of their lineup the same this week, as four of five starters from the previous two tournaments return. Fuller, freshman Maisie Filler, sophomore Marina Escobar Domingo and senior Addie Baggarly will all retain their normal spots in the lineup, while the fifth spot will be filled by junior Clara Manzalini. Manzalini competed in the first tournament but was replaced by freshman Sara Ericsson for The Ally.
The East Lake Golf Club is the oldest golf club in Atlanta, originally founded in 1904, The course was completely redesigned by Donald Ross in 1913 but has been largely untouched since. East Lake has hosted many famous tournaments over the years, including the 1963 Ryder Cup. It has been the permanent host of the Tour Championship, the final event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, since 2004.
The East Lake Cup will be broadcast live each day from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the Golf Channel.
