Located 10 miles south of Gainesville, Paynes Prairie is an oasis for visitors and wildlife alike. From alligators, bison and deer, to canopies of hardwood oaks, it is the home of 20 different biological communities. Although it was officially announced as a preserve in 1971, it was a haven for wildlife long before that.

The Gentle Walk and Talk event every Thursday morning will suit those who are looking to spend a quiet day in the outdoors but are not great hikers best. A two-mile hike will take leads to the Chacala Trail Group Area Primitive Camp Site. Cone's Dike Trail is eight miles long, for the more ambitious hiker. The preserve's Stargazing Night on Jan. 26 features live blues by the campfire and smores
