While the recent cold weather has encouraged Gainesville residents to bundle up, there is one group of students who is choosing to do the opposite.

The Naturist Gators, a nudist group which includes UF students, is heading to Lutz, Fla., near Tampa this weekend for a nude volleyball tournament.

Daniel Phillips, 24, creator of the Naturist Gators Facebook group, will play volleyball with about 40 nudists during the ninth annual Super Bowl South volleyball tournament in Lutz, Fla., at Lake Como Family Nudist Resort.

The event, which will cost about $50 for participants and $6 for attendees with student IDs, is a spin-off of the Volleyball Super Bowl in Pennsylvania, which began in 1971.

Participants will enjoy a weekend of camping at the resort and playing volleyball in the buff.

Phillips, a UF advertising junior, recently started the naturist group as a partner organization of Vita Nuda and hopes to educate others about a naturist lifestyle.

He wants people to understand some of the misconceptions about naturists.

“We are not exhibitionists,” he said. “We only get naked where it is legal and socially acceptable.”
