Gainesville residents may be the targets of two scams, according to police.

Gainesville Police Department spokesman Keith Kameg warned residents to look out for scam e-mails promising readers about $3,000 to become secret shoppers.

Readers that respond to the fake company are either asked for their bank account information to deposit the money or told they will receive a check or money order, Kameg said.

If a check or money order is sent, the recipients are told they should only use a certain amount of it and send back the rest, he said.

The check or money order bounces within a week, meaning the shoppers not only spent their own money on purchases but also sent extra money to the company.

The other scam involves men in a white van who tell residents that they have discounted speakers for sale, Kameg said.

The men show victims work orders to install five speakers in a home or business, but say suppliers sent seven, he said.

A Gainesville man agreed to purchase the speakers last week for $180, and when he installed them at home, he realized they did not work, Kameg said.
