I voted against Brett Roth's confirmation as Chomp the Vote executive director during Student Senate deliberations last week. In what is likely to be the most pivotal election of our lives, we cannot afford to pass up the opportunity to register as many Gators as possible. Unfortunately, I fear that Student Government may have done just that.

My objections to Mr. Roth stem not from his internship with the Republican National Committee, but rather from the simple fact that he is not here in Gainesville to direct Chomp the Vote. The voter registration deadline in Florida is Oct. 6, and when Mr. Roth returns, he will have less than two months to build an organization and register as many students as possible.

Last year, Chomp the Vote took this task head-on and ran a highly visible and effective campaign, registering thousands of voters. I fear that this year one of the most visible and effective organizations in Student Government may be neither visible nor effective. I hope Mr. Roth can prove me wrong, but his appointment is a step backward for UF.
