In the latest effort to combat traffic congestion on campus, UF Transportation and Parking Services is considering a proposal to raise the decal price for motorcycles and scooters.

While a moderate increase in the cost of a decal would be reasonable to encourage those living close to campus to walk or bike to class, the proposed increase in price - more than 230 percent - is just absurd.

For some students, the whole reasoning behind owning a motorcycle or scooter instead of a car is because those means of transportation are more budget-friendly.

For others, it is just not feasible to take an inconvenient bus every day when they live off campus.

But all students will be expected to pay up to park their Kawasakis or Vespas on campus if this proposal goes through.

And that is just one more example of administrators not putting students first.

Ron Fuller, assistant director of Transportation and Parking Services, said the decals are still "embarrassingly cheap."

By tacking on an extra $85 for a decal, the only thing that's embarrassing is the lack of consideration for cash-strapped students already facing rising tuition costs.

We get that scooters aren't exactly positive for the environment. We understand that traffic needs to be reduced to create a more sustainable campus. But this drastic increase seems to have more to do with UF's other, well, green effort.
