Man sentenced in parking garage shooting

A man charged in connection with the November killing of a Tallahassee man in a Gainesville parking garage was sentenced in the Alachua County Criminal Courthouse Thursday.

Antwan Maye, 25, was not accused of firing the gun that killed Andrew Arosemena, 22, in the Southwest Downtown Parking Garage, but he was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm.

According to his arrest report, Maye pointed a gun at Arosemena before another man shot him.

Spencer Mann, spokesman for the state attorney's office, said Maye pled no contest and was sentenced to five years in prison and an additional five years of probation. As part of his sentence, Maye has to testify against accused shooter Opkara Nelson, Mann said.

A trial date for Nelson has not yet been set, and Mann said prosecutors are still in the early stages of preparation.

"By the time you hire expert witnesses, take depositions and get analysis of forensic evidence back from the lab, it a lot of times takes a year to three years to get a case to trial," he said.
