Gainesville Police and the Alachua County Sheriff's Office will join University Police in buckling down on alcohol violations on Friday.
Officers will be stationed from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday in the midtown and downtown bar areas, a UPD news release stated.
Police will be looking for open containers, underage alcohol possession, driving under the influence and other alcohol-related traffic violations, the release stated.
UPD Lt. Stacy Ettel said the detail will be held this weekend because police expect to have groups of partiers heading to midtown and downtown to celebrate the UF-LSU game.Police will be on foot around the bars, on sidewalks and directing traffic, Ettel said.
This is the second time police have cracked down on alcohol laws this semester. The first time was during the weekend of the UF-Miami game, the release stated.
Police made three DUI arrests and four other alcohol-related arrests, and they issued 66 traffic citations that weekend, the release stated.
Ettel said the point of increased policing is not to punish people but to raise awareness.
