Kevin Nowak, Liquid Limbs guitarist and vocalist, gave an unusual forecast for the band's Saturday performance at The Atlantic. He promised a "razor sharp set of mind-blowing volcanic riff tornadoes."

This two-man local band includes Nowak, 30, and Chase Permann, the drummer, who Nowak described as "a cross between Captain Caveman and Jesus on doughnuts."

Liquid Limbs has been together for roughly three years, Nowak said. He met Permann in a music theory class at Santa Fe College.

"We found we shared the same influences," Nowak said. "I had been looking to start a band for five years, but I never meshed with anyone until I met Chase. Then things just started to happen magically."

On its MySpace page, the band describes its sound as "what two dudes do to avoid watching sitcoms," but Nowak said the description is just an attempt at humor.

Its sound actually comes from inspirations such as the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Steely Dan, he said. Liquid Limbs' sound is based on a "principal riff" and good medley, which creates their pop/rock/indie mix.

"We use colorful melodies and aim to have it come across like heavy as possible," Nowak said. "We don't want to be pigeonholed into a genre."

The band's debut album, "Orquid," was recorded in Gainesville at Crescendo Sound Studios, and the name "Orquid" is a cross between an orchid and a squid.

"We wanted to play upon an oceanic theme," Nowak said. "We wanted to combine the two. Something beautiful like orchids and mean like a squid."

When Liquid Limbs is not busy recording, writing songs or performing, Nowak tries to stay in shape by running a mile a day. He said Permann plays video games.

"I don't have the patience for it, but I always end up on the couch watching him play 'Star Wars' or 'Lord of the Rings' games," Nowak said.

Nowak also holds a job at Tim and Terry's in the music store and the bar.

"It can be amusing, but sometimes it's a serious test of self-discipline," Nowak said of working at the bar. "I try to show love to the people. There's always an eclectic crowd."

Liquid Limbs doesn't aspire to be the next big thing. They would like to make a comfortable living, Nowak said.

Right now, the band is saving money to tour.

"I want to one day be able to travel in an urban camouflage stretch limo," Nowak said. "Just because it's absolutely ridiculous."

Their families helped support their music careers, particularly Permann's parents and Nowak's sister, who is also a musician, he said.

"Financially, moral support and they feed us," he said. "They're amazing, wonderful people."

Doors at The Atlantic open at 10 p.m., and Liquid Limbs will play along with Whiskey & Co. and Hometeam. Cover for under 21 is $8 and over 21 is $6.
