More than 200 people attend dog show

Every dog has its day, and on Saturday, Taz pawed her way to the top for best in show at the Fourth Annual Mutts and Pups Dog Show.

More than 200 people and about 100 dogs attended the all-day event at James Paul Park in High Springs, including Ellen Powers and her Jack Russell terrier, Taz.

The pair has been competing and racking up the first place finishes for about six years.

“We’re a team and always have been,” said Powers, who is from High Springs.

Taz completed a routine filled with leaping, flipping and dancing that also landed her in first place for the best trick category.

“The main focus is Taz,” Powers said. “I just act like a prop, and she knows what to do.”

Tina Prizament, event director, said this year’s turnout was better than ever, with more than 50 dogs competing in 12 categories.

The Alachua County Humane Society was one of the main sponsors for the event, bringing six dogs to show for adoption.

Three of the six dogs brought by the the Humane Society were adopted.

“Any time I can go back to the shelter with less animals than I brought out to an event is a very good day,” said Kirk Eppenstein, director of the Humane Society.
