Sink pledges to help schools

While budget reform, immigration and health care have dominated this election season, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink brought attention to education issues Monday.

Speaking in a conference call with student reporters, Sink, Florida’s chief financial officer, vowed to improve the state’s education system, which has been plagued by budget cuts.

Sink said the key to improving education would be to redesign our economy. She wants to transform the state from depending on tourism to fostering health care and high-tech industries.

Sink also briefly discussed the process of selecting future appointments to the Florida Board of Governors, the body that oversees the state’s system of public universities. If elected, she said she would appoint members who she felt were not only qualified but also committed to doing the job.

“We’re not looking for political hacks or people designed to be on the board for political gain,” she said.

Throughout her conference call, Sink made no specific reference to her opponent, Republican nominee and former health care CEO Rick Scott, choosing only to focus on her individual positions.

“I know that I have the character, honesty and integrity that people are looking for in their next governor,” she said.
