While I was not shocked that the Alligator endorsed Alex Sink for governor, I was disappointed. Instead of explaining the issues it agreed with Sink on, it spent the entire editorial bashing Rick Scott, making a number of false statements about his campaign.

First, the statement he would do everything in his power to take away rights from immigrants is false. He selected Jennifer Carroll as his running mate, a woman who actually immigrated to this country at the age of 8 from Trinidad. Mr. Scott supports measures to help secure our border and is against illegal immigration, not legal immigration.

Characterizing him as an anti-immigrant is unfair and misleading.

Additionally, the endorsement notes Scott’s past business history but makes no mention of questionable business decisions Alex Sink made as president of NationsBank, and as a board member of Sykes Enterprise or how she failed as the “fiscal watchdog” of the state as CFO the past four years.

Finally, the notion that Rick Scott seems afraid to confront his opponents in public debates is laughable. Monday night, he participated in a nationally televised debate on CNN against Sink and more than held his own.  Sink on the other hand, broke debate rules by receiving a text message from her campaign staff during a commercial break.

I would encourage all voters to watch Monday Night’s debate online and evaluate both candidates in more detail before casting their ballot.
