Students launch online database to meet neighbors

In Fine Arts C, Room 310, 240 photos are taken in 180 minutes.

A man wearing white-framed eyeglasses sits in the middle of the room, facing the screen of a MacBook. He is unsure where his idea will take him, but he has a clear vision.

Jorge Perez Gallego, along with six other graphic design graduate students, launched “I___Local” during Art Bash.

As part of the campaign, the “I___Local” photo booth will be at the Union Street Farmers’ Market from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. tonight.

The campaign aims to create an online database that provides local advice from residents to construct a community where neighbors know one another.

“People always find the answers on the Internet, but it is not nearly as fun,” Perez said. “If someone can help you, it would be your neighbor.”

Campaign members are in charge of taking pictures of attendees with a sign that reads what they do on a daily basis.

Participants are able to access the database through Facebook, but soon all the pictures will be displayed on http://localiam.org.

Robert Finkel, a member of the group, said in order to attract Gainesville residents, members decided to carry out their second campaign downtown.

The group realized the Farmers Market brought the community together by selling local goods, which is the principle it hopes to transmit with “I___Local.”

Attendees can take home pamphlets that explain the mission of the campaign.
