The Alligator seems to have lost its way as a news source.

Monday’s edition devoted the entire editorial column to criticizing the media response to the tragic shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, but not a single column inch to covering the shooting itself.

Not once did the paper name the shooter, allegedly Jared Lee Loughner, or the six people killed, including federal judge John Roll and  9-year-old Christina Green, or the 13 others wounded.

While editorial commentary is a core media function, simply reporting the news is absolutely essential.

The Alligator is a key news source for many students, and this failure to report the news is a betrayal of readers’ trust.
