MIAMI - Officials say a South Florida police officer facing drug charges has been fired after fleeing to Brazil earlier this month.

The Boynton Beach Police Department reports that 28-year-old David Britto's employment was officially terminated on Thursday. That's the same day a federal grand jury in Miami indicted Britto and his mother each on three additional counts related to his escape.

Britto was arrested in July on federal methamphetamine conspiracy charges. He has pleaded not guilty.

Britto's trial was previously scheduled to begin this month in Miami.

Britto was Boynton Beach's officer of the year in 2010 and is a former Marine. He had been on paid administrative leave since his arrest.

Britto's attorney says he doesn't know anything about Britto's recent actions.
