When appliances are turned off but plugged in, they use "stand-by power," power the appliances draws and stores when it's off.
About 10 percent of energy use is used by stand-by power, also known as "vampire power."
That can add up very quickly.
The solution can be fixed easily be remembering to unplug your microwave, laptop charger, TV and lamps — among other things — when you're not using them.
It might seem like a hassle, but the money you save each month — and eventually each year — could be worth it.
An easy way to remember is to post a reminder on the door to unplug things before you leave. Eventually, it will become second nature.
