An elderly man who disappeared in Gainesville Sunday was found early Monday morning in Hillsborough County after the University Police Department issued a Silver Alert for him.

James L. Woodard, 83, was pulled over by a deputy from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Monday morning for weaving in and out of traffic, said Maj. Brad Barber, UPD public information officer.

Woodard, who is cognitively impaired, dropped off his wife at Shands Hospital between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Sunday but didn't return home afterward, according to a UPD news release.

Relatives told UPD at about 3 p.m. Sunday that Woodard was missing.

UPD issued a Silver Alert Sunday after they couldn't find Woodard in the Shands area, Barber said.

When the Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputy realized Woodard was the subject of a Silver Alert after pulling him over, Woodard was taken into the agency's protective custody, Barber said.

The sheriff's office told UPD at about 2:30 a.m. Monday that Woodard had been found, and UPD told his family.

It is his relatives' responsibility to pick him up in Hillsborough County, Barber said.

Woodard was not injured, according to a UPD news release.

Barber said such missing persons incidents are infrequent for UPD.
