An armed robbery occurred around midnight Friday north of Sorority Row in a residential neighborhood at Southwest Ninth Street and Southwest Sixth Avenue, according to Gainesville Police.

Police blocked off the area from Southwest Second Avenue to Southwest Eighth Avenue, and from Southwest 13th Street to Southwest Sixth Street.

According to GPD Lt. Jorge Campos, a young woman was walking by herself when a black male approached her brandishing a silver handgun, and took her purse. The victim was unharmed.

He ran north through an alleyway. Police recovered the purse, and the armed suspect is still at large. Police described him as 5'6'' with a medium build and dark clothing. A K-9 unit was sweeping the area as of 2 a.m.

This is the second armed robbery in the area in a month. On Monday, the Alligator ran a letter from UPD Chief Linda Stump advising students of the dangers of walking alone at night.

Anyone with information should call GPD at 352-955-1818.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
