Taking a Cue from the Past: New Bars Channel Old Favorites

A steady influx of new bars in both the Downtown and Midtown districts are piquing students’ interests about whether to stick with the classics or go for something new. We say, why not have the best of both? For a quick guide for what you’re getting into by visiting the new kids on the block, check out our comparisons below.

If you like 101 Downtown, try Simons Night Club. 8 S. Main St.

Both are run by the same parent company, 101 Management Group. Simons is a revamp of the classic electronic music mecca that helped put Gainesville on the map back in its heyday. Its rebirth means more shows from touring DJs, an entertainment complex that includes a rooftop dayclub and a true VIP experience. If you want to be up to date with the latest and breaking electronic hits, Simons is your kind of place.

If you like Grog House, try Fat Daddy’s. 1702 W. University Ave.

Filled with a full-liquor bar, snack station, daiquiri bar and a bumping sound system to fuel late-night dancing, Fat Daddy’s is looking to help build up the Midtown strip with yet another bar and dance floor option to help thin out crowds from nearby bars. Similar to the old Fat Tuesdays that was replaced by the Half Cork’d wine bar downtown, the music is loud and the décor is flashy. While it still needs better drink specials to compete with the likes of Grog and Gator City, it’s a reliable option to grab a seat and a frozen Hurricane to start up your night.

If you like Balls, try Jack’s Bar. 16 S. Main St.

With the same owner and similar drink specials, Jack’s is the downtown counterpart of midtown favorite Balls Bookstore. While the old location was demolished back in 2010, the new setup is open and ready to handle crowds looking for all-you-can-drink specials. The inside offers a narrow strip for drinking space, but lookout for the outdoor beer garden to open soon.

If you like Alcove, try Whiskey Room. 104 S. Main St.

Intimate and elegant, Whiskey Room promises to deliver the experience of a speakeasy. Hardwood floors, stained-glass windows and leather accenting all add to the atmosphere, offering downtown visitors a place to drink and talk with less of the rowdy distractions found in other downtown bars.
