Sweet Berries: Your new slice of heaven

Last Saturday morning, lying in bed, I rolled over and grabbed my phone on which I naturally checked Facebook.

I saw a simple update that said, “At the grand opening of Sweet Berries.” Fifteen minutes later, my roommate and I were lacing up our tennis shoes and walking out the door.

You know how parents always tell that story about how they walked five miles in the snow to school? Well, this is my version of the story, except it ends much more deliciously.

I walked miles to attend the soft opening of Sweet Berries, a new eatery and frozen custard shop located on NW 13th Street. Though, I have never done something more incredibly worth it in my entire life.

Sweet Berries brings the homemade goodness of your mother’s best sandwich or tuna melt and combines it with some intensely creamy and incredible frozen custard.

I started my meal with a tuna melt. The meal tasted exactly like what my mom makes me at home, which made me depressed, but reminded me of the good ‘ole days. My roommate had a salad, which she liked as well. But there was nothing that compared to what was to come.

The word custard sounds disgusting, but it tastes like a bundle of angels came down from heaven and landed in your cup.

I was not sure how long it would be until I would make it back to this wonderful establishment, so I decided to go big. I chose the Monkey Business sundae. I entered whipped cream and custard euphoria instantly and did not think life could get any better.

My roommate got a “concrete,” which is essentially the Coldstone-d version of custard. In her “caramel crunch” custard, Sweet Berries mixed in Heath bar and caramel sauce to make a delicious blend of crunchy and sweet.

Her custard was even better.

I now understood the obsession people had with custard. It is more than a frozen treat or a delicious surprise. It is an experience. The thick, creamy nature of the custard leaves you full afterward, but strangely ready for more because no amount of it is ever good enough. Custard is now my frozen treat of choice.

I strongly encourage visiting and getting your hands on a concrete ASAP no matter how many mountains you have to cross, miles you have to walk or crappy Gainesville intersections you have to cross to get there.
