Photo app holding campus-themed photo competition for university students

Instagram-savvy Gators may be able to win prizes for their campus-themed snaps.

An app, Momentage, is conducting a nationwide university photo contest through April 30.

The photo contest is set up as a scavenger hunt that requires participants to capture specific college moments. These moments can include taking pictures of the college’s bell tower or recording the college’s mascot at a sporting event.

“It’s really cool to share, kind of like sharing a story,” 19-year-old UF accounting freshman Carie Donica said as she took a picture of Century Tower.

The app is free for download on iTunes, and the grand prize winner will receive an iPad with retina display.

UF multimedia reporting professor Steve Johnson said photos can be powerful.

“The brain processes images 60,000 times faster than text, and the more you understand an image, the more you can relate to it,” he said. “They’re connecting people through image.”
