On June 18, How Do You Roll?, located on 1802 West University Avenue, will be celebrating “International Sushi Day” with a free Cali roll (a seaweed wrap with white or brown rice, krabstick, avocado, cucumber and sesame seeds) with any purchase.

As a student who lived on campus without a meal plan, I started exploring early in the year for great places to eat that were right around campus. While I’ve never been a fan of raw sushi, How Do You Roll? soon became one of my regular eateries and one of my favorite places to eat. I found that while most sushi places mostly focus on raw sushi, How Do You Roll? has a nice mixture of both raw sushi and cooked sushi.

What really makes this restaurant stand out, however, is the fact that it serves such unique sushi rolls. Offering everything from cream cheese to avocados, How Do You Roll? has the most unique ingredient menu I have ever seen for a sushi restaurant. While there is a list of over 15 featured sushi rolls, one of the best parts of How Do You Roll? is that you can custom order your roll, choosing from a list of over 30 ingredients and eight sauces.

Although I love ordering custom rolls (my favorite combination tends towards a roll with beef, oranges, carrots, and avocados), I do have a few favorites within their featured rolls. Their Tropical Chicken Roll, a roll in a soy wrap with rice, grilled chicken, jalapeño, strawberries, cream cheese, teriyaki sauce and mango salsa, is superb. It is by far one of my favorite rolls and one of my favorite things to get there. The Funky Fresh Chicken, which is in a soy wrap, with rice, grilled chicken, avocado, cream cheese, green onions, sesame seeds and creamy miso sauce is also quite tasty, even though it does sound like a weird combination of ingredients.

Besides sushi, How Do You Roll? has an extensive menu of Asian cuisine. They have a whole lineup of noodle and rice bowls, which are extremely filling and delicious.  If you don’t have the appetite for a whole meal, there is a nice array of appetizers, including their incredible beef and veggie dumplings and miso soup, which became one of my favorite things to eat, and a must have whenever I was sick. They also sell Japanese sodas, in flavors such as strawberry and lychee, which have a cool, refreshing flavor and are perfect for a warm summer day.

All in all, How Do You Roll? is a delicious spot to grab lunch with friends between classes. If you haven’t tried it yet (or even if you have), stop by on June 18 for International Sushi Day and try it out!
