The Starving Gator: New York's hidden gems

I’m spending the summer in New York City for an internship and, being the foodie that I am, I mapped a strategic plan of restaurants I wanted to hit months in advance. The fun part about the city though, is stumbling across little known places that often have the best food. My roommate and I made a goal for the summer to eat like locals. That is, hit the places where you won’t mingle with models and celebrities, but can still get good food at a good price. I’ve only been here a little over a month, but I’ve already found a few hidden gems that are definitely worth sharing! If you’re ever in the city, do yourself a massive favor and tryout one of these three picks:

Three of Cups in the East Village—to be honest, the East Village is bursting with adorable restaurants. Keep in mind though, that most of these places are holes in the wall that don’t accept credit cards. So when my roommate and I (both strapped for cash) were desperately searching for dinner we stumbled across this cute little place. After debating for a while we eventually settled on the Margherita pizza, and I’ve been dreaming about it ever since. It’s not your traditional greasy New York style pizza, so you may just feel like you’ve teleported to Rome.

V Bar at St. Marks Place—this place is crazy popular with the East Village bar hopping crowd, but I prefer to come for brunch. Yes, you really can’t live in NYC without having a go-to brunch place, and this is definitely mine. You can get anything from a classic French toast to a caprese Panini, and it’s all amazing. Truly, you can’t go wrong.

Ammorino Gelato in Greenwich Village—It’s actually scary how many times I’ve been to this place in the last month. I blame a serious sweet tooth and the fact that I’m living less than two blocks away. Either way, this place is a must-visit if you’re in town. It’s probably the most touristy stop on my list, but it’s well worth the wait. Not only do they have any flavor of gelato you could possibly dream of, they also have gelato macarons. Yes, you read that correctly: macarons stuffed with gelato. Honestly, there aren’t words to describe the experience, you just have to go try it for yourself.

So there you have it! This list is pretty short and sweet, but I could probably go on forever about all the adorable places there are to eat in NYC. I’ll be back later on in the summer with more finds, and also the results of my quest to find the best cupcakes the city has to offer. You really won’t want to miss it!
