You’re scrolling through your Facebook timeline. Someone posts a funny picture of a friend, and another posts a recipe for how to make brownies. Finally you see them -- that dreaded, five-paragraph long post about how much your friend loves his girlfriend or the 18-picture Instagram collage that shows how great the past five months have been with her new love. Suddenly, social media doesn’t seem like much fun anymore.
Ever since we were old enough to type, the computer and our phone has been the main way we keep in touch with friends, whether it’s a group text message to make plans or just updating your Facebook profile so your friends from high school can see what’s going on in your life now. Whatever the reason may be, social media has allowed us to maintain relationships from far away, and now it’s being abused as the diary for the world to see.
Now don’t get me wrong here, I love seeing posts from guys that you wouldn’t expect to be sappy. Kudos to you for breaking the stereotype and proving men can have emotions. However, I do have a problem when your daily posts about bae are all I see anymore.
Most people say, “Well then why don’t you just unfollow me?” Here’s the thing, I’m caring about you in the best way because at the end of the day, nothing ever gets off the Internet. The world will forever be able to know how much you loved your girlfriend from 2010, even though you married someone else in 2014. Not to mention employers scour social media to see what kind of person you are. Doesn’t that concern you at all?
I would say, leave the posts to every once in a while and make sure they’re clean. A private, private life is the best way to go.
Using social media to meet new people is a growing trend among 20- and 30-somethings. Apps like OkCupid Locals and Blendr let young adults set up instant dates.
