Santa Fe College Student Senate has done a lot this semester — other than reviewing or passing any resolutions.
Since the end of summer, none of the senators has presented a resolution before the chamber. At Wednesday’s Senate meeting, Senate President Carol Daugherty urged senators to begin thinking of ideas for resolutions, such as relocating an ATM on campus to make it more accessible for students on the weekends.
Most of Senate’s time this semester has been spent approving, reinstating and grilling new senators, directors and leadership team members.
In keeping with that trend Wednesday evening, Senate approved Tony Faieta as the parking/safety and transportation director, Sen. Benjamin Myers as bailiff, Christina Zaldivar as an at-large senator and reinstated two clubs from leaves of absence.
The lack of resolutions isn’t abnormal, said Myers, who has served in the chamber for more than a year. Senate generally spends the first month or so warming up and getting the hang of things, he added.
"It’s a normal routine," he said, adding he has "a couple resolutions… that will help students’ rights" he will present in coming weeks.
Pro tempore Matthew Pearson said the lack of resolutions is also in part because of a chamber full of new and inexperienced senators. He said he expects resolutions to start pouring in at the beginning of October.
Joshua Gomez, a replacement senator new to the chamber, also has ideas for resolutions. The only problem is he doesn’t know how to write resolutions — something he wants to change.
"I want to learn as much as possible (about writing resolutions)," the 19-year-old club senator said.
Student Government will host a training session Tuesday which will include lessons on how to write and format resolutions.
