UF students will continue to have unlimited online access to The New York Times.

The subscription, which has to be renewed each year, was updated this Fall, said Nicholas Carré, the Student Body treasurer.

“You’ll have that as long as we have the contract signed and we’re paying it,” he said.

The subscription costs about $80,000, with $40,000 paid for by SG and $40,000 from the Office of the Provost, he said. The subscription has been available online since October 2014.

A constant issue has been marketing the free subscription to students.

“We have the service, but it’s only getting spread by word of mouth,” he said.

Ariana Raitano, a 20-year-old UF finance sophomore, said it’s a resource students don’t really know about.

“I didn’t even know it was offered at all,” she said.

She said she found out about the subscription before Thanksgiving. Now, she reads two or three stories a day.

Carré said according to the Office of the Provost 5,898 individuals have accessed the subscription. There wasn’t a defined time frame of when those numbers were gathered, but the numbers were similar to the readership numbers during the 2014-2015 year.

He said SG is also looking to add other news outlets.
