A Lake City man was arrested for driving under the influence after rear-ending a scooter at a red light Sunday, Gainesville Police said.

Anthony Eugene Singleton

Anthony Eugene Singleton, 50, was driving a purple 2007 Mazda 3 at about 2:05 a.m. when he crashed into a stopped scooter at the intersection of Southwest 13th Street and Diamond Road, just down the road from UF campus, according to a police report.

The scooter driver suffered minor injuries, according to the report. The back of the scooter and the front of Singleton’s car were damaged.

A red-and-teary-eyed Singleton smelled like alcohol as he struggled to find his insurance information, according to the report.

Police said Singleton had difficulty describing what occurred and repeated the officer’s questions before answering them.

Singleton performed poorly on field sobriety exercises and, using a breathalyzer, police recorded his blood-alcohol levels to be .023 and .022, which is below the legal limit.

The toxicity report of a urine sample was not available as of press time.

Police arrested Singleton on a charge of driving under the influence with property damage. He was taken to the Alachua County Jail where he remains, as of press time, in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
