A student who will lead soldiers into battle after graduating was unanimously approved Tuesday by UF Student Senate as the next Student Government Veteran’s Affairs executive cabinet director.

Sean Titus, 21, was nominated by Student Body President Susan Webster after Student Body Vice President Brendon “BJ” Jonassiant suggested him, Webster said. Titus, a member of UF’s ROTC program, was an Impact Party District B senator from Fall 2015 to Fall 2016. After he graduates, Titus said he’ll become a ranked second lieutenant commissioned officer in the U.S. Army.

“BJ and I feel that he is more than qualified to fill the role,” Webster said.

He was the only candidate in consideration, she said.

Titus said he’s worked with UF Collegiate Veterans Society. In Fall 2014, he applied for the position but was denied.

He plans to rebuild a fountain in the Reitz Union pond and dedicate it to veterans, he said.

“The focus is on our veterans,” he said. “We can’t wait to help them.”

The Senate meeting was canceled last week due to a lack of pressing business, said Senate President Smith Meyers. UF Student Body Constitution’s Article III Section 6 states Senate must meet once every two weeks. Senate also approved $1,400 in traveling fees for Gator Bhangra, an Indian dance group associated with the Indian Student Association, and $360 for the Vegan Eating for Gators student organization.

A resolution stating Senate support for the $2.2 million Plaza of the Americas renovations also passed.
